Grandmas Homemade Turkey Broth Recipe

An easy recipe for homemade turkey broth.

Ingredients

Tip: While cooking your turkey dinner, instead of throwing away water from boiling potatoes or other vegetables, reserve this water in a large pot to later make this homemade broth.
Leftover turkey (whole)
Water (or vegetable water)
1 carrot, chopped into large chunks
2 celery stalks, chopped into large chunks
1 medium onion, quartered
1-2 cloves garlic, whole

Directions

Once the meal is over, have your best kitchen helpers join you in the kitchen to de-bone the turkey.

Use clean hands to clean good pieces of turkey away from bones.

Save good turkey in airtight container in fridge.

Throw all of the bones, skins and bits and pieces you do not want to eat back into the turkey roaster so you do not waste any of the juice at the bottom of roaster.

Pour all leftover water from potatoes and vegetables over turkey bones.

Add extra water to completely cover bones.

Add carrots, celery, onion and garlic.

Season with salt and pepper.

Cover with a lid, bring to a boil, then turn down to simmer for about 3 hours.

After 3 hours turn the stock off.

Strain through a colander pour the stock out of the roasting pot into a large pot and let cool.

Keep out 6-8 cups of stock for your soup, and freeze the rest in Tupperware or freezer bags.

If you have kept your broth in the fridge, a layer of fat will form on top which you can just skim away.
